Perennial bulbs are plenty of fun to grow and Star of Persia Allium christophii can signal spring warming as bulb growth emerges from its underground home each spring. It gets even better, though. The rapidly growing stalk eventually supports a giant, purple flower sphere that looks as great in the landscape as it does in a cut arrangement. Large, strap-like leaves surround the base of the plant, forming a mound before the stalks energy.
Look for these large allium flowers to bloom in middle to late May, depending on your growing zone. They can survive winter down to zone 4 and handle a little heat in zone 8, plus all conditions between. The stalks and large flowers rise to about 16 to 20 inches high. Like all alliums, these bulbs are deer resistant and easy-care spring stunners.
Star of Persia Allium Christophii Care
For spring bloom, plant your Star of Persia Allium bulb in spring. Prep well-draining soil in a sunny location. A rule of thumb is to place the bulbs at two to three times their diameter. Be sure to loosen or amend the soil a few inches deeper than the bulb goes. Follow the planting depth in the pot in which you receive container-grown alliums. Add a small amount of bone meal to the hole to help promote root growth.
Once they begin to grow, give your alliums consistent and regular moisture while they are growing and blooming. Avoid watering when they are dormant to prevent bulb rot. Feel free to cut an open flower, wait until it is dry, or leave it in place through fall for its appearance. But leave the foliage alone to turn yellow and die back. This feeds the bulb. Other than bone meal at planting time, there is no need to fertilize allium, but you can apply mulch if you like to hold in moisture or for appearance.
Star of Persia Allium Christophii Spacing
Alliums look best in a small or large grouping. Space your bulbs apart so that there is one allium every square foot. Consider their mature height if planting with other spring bulbs.
