Starfield™ Hydrangea is a new introduction from 2021 that has a solidly colored mophead of blooms in a sturdy and compact shape. Hydrangea macrophylla have the largest leaves and even larger ball shaped bloom clusters. They make great cut flowers that last in the vase and are perfect for drying. Starfield™ is a moderate grower that keeps its overall mounded shape with very little maintenance.
Mophead Hydrangea are very resistant to deer and other pests. Starfield’s size makes it useful planted at the front of a cottage garden border or grown in a container as a specimen plant. The long lasting blooms will keep color in your garden all summer long in full sun to partly shaded locations.
Starfield™ Hydrangea Care
Hydrangea prefer to have moist, but well drained soil. Extra irrigation will be needed during hot spells or if growing in a container. The soil pH can be either acid or alkaline. The color of the blooms will change depending on which end of the pH scale the soil is. More acid soils make the blooms turn blue, while more alkaline soil makes the blooms turn red or pink. Using amendments on the soil will help you achieve the look you want. Fertilizing Hydrangeas is best done at the beginning of spring when new growth emerges. A well balanced, slow release fertilizer is recommended.
Pruning of Starfield™ Hydrangea is easy. Just a quick deadheading of the spent blooms is all that is needed. Mulching of this deciduous shrub for the winter is recommended in the lower hardiness zones. A 2-3 inch deep mulch with leaves or organic compost will help Starfield™ stay cost until spring.
Starfield™ Hydrangea Spacing
A compact grower at a height of 3 feet and width of 3 feet make this Hydrangea a perfect candidate for growing in a container on a deck or at the front door. Container should measure at least 24 inches in diameter. When planting in the garden bed, Starfield™ Hydrangea is best spaced 3 feet on center.
