There is so much going for the Starfire Pink Cuphea it is hard to know where to start. Also known as the cigar plant for its profusion of cigar-shaped blooms in pink-red, white and mauve from late spring until the fall. A final size of 3 feet makes this evergreen shrub a low-maintenance and versatile option.
Once established the Starfire Pink Cuphea is both drought and heat tolerant. It is considered winter hardy down to zone 8 and is rarely bothered by grazing deer. Good disease and pest resistance make this shrub even easier to grow and care for. Starfire Pink Cuphea is a fantastic addition for any sunny border or container.
Starfire Pink Cuphea Care
The fast-growing Starfire Pink Cuphea is not picky about the soil pH. However, it does prefer a fertile, moist and well-drained soil that does not become waterlogged. It can tolerate both full sun and partial shade and copes well with dry spells once mature.
Regular deadheading will keep the Starfire Pink Cuphea looking its best and promote re-blooming right up until the first frost. A light trim in late winter will help keep it to shape and size if required. Even though it is well suited to a large container, more frequent watering will be required when grown this way. Mulching annually will not only help prevent moisture loss over the hotter months but also protect the roots over winter.
Starfire Pink Cuphea Spacing
When fully grown, the Starfire Pink Cuphea can grow to 2 to 3 feet tall and wide. You can use a planting distance of 36 inches for a well-defined appearance, or space shrubs closer for a denser look.
