The textured, black flowers of the Starlet™ Velvet Petunia are likely to make you do a double-take. Pure black blooms with a soft, velvet-like appearance add an unexpected pop to a landscape or container starting in the spring and lasting through the summer. The blooms are surrounded by light green foliage that creates a full, lush look. Petunias are easy to maintain and can do very well without much attention, but removing spent blooms and cutting back leggy growth will encourage branching and even more flowers.
Petunias are mounded plants that naturally grow to be very full. The Starlet™ Velvet Petunia is a mounded trailing plant, so this stunner also pushes out stems that make a striking but rather compact ground cover when the plant is featured in a landscape. The trailing tendencies make this Petunia an excellent container plant. The stems will just spill over the edge of a container for effortless style on a porch or patio.
Starlet™ Velvet Petunia Care
Plant Petunias in a spot that will receive 6 hours of sunlight. Areas that get intense afternoon sun may be too much, so aim for an area that receives morning light and afternoon shade. Slightly acidic, rich soil that allows good drainage is ideal. Petunia plants have average water needs, and letting the soil dry out can help promote more flowers. This plant will need water when the top couple of inches of soil are dry to the touch. Fertilize the plant using balanced, water-soluble plant food every few weeks.
Petunias can grow as perennials in hot climates, but this plant is grown as an annual in most areas. Keep your Petunias growing all year by bringing them indoors for the winter. Prepare the plant for indoor life by trimming them back. Once inside, place them in a sunny window and continue to water when the top couple of inches of soil dry out.
Starlet™ Velvet Petunia Spacing
The Starlet™ Velvet Petunia is a small plant that will reach 8 to 10 inches tall, but it will spread out 12 to 20 inches. Landscape plants can be spaced 20 inches apart, but a 12-inch container is enough space for 3 to 4 plants.
