It’s hard to forget a Gaura Butterfly Flower in full bloom! And you’re in luck, because the Stratosphere™ Pink Picotee blooms from May until September. Also known as Lindheimer’s beeblossom, Indian feather and pink gaura, Butterfly Flower is a favorite native North American flower. The wisps of delicate pink flowers reach into the sky, enticing butterflies to their blooms. Plant these showy sprays of pink in a full-sun garden bed and watch as it catches every garden visitor’s eye. This native beauty is a hardy, low-maintenance plant that can withstand hot, dry conditions and drought.
A plant like the Stratosphere™ Pink Picotee can be nothing but a true “thriller” in any combination planting. It steals the show with its long wands of pink flowers that dance on the breeze, practically hovering in midair. Many gardeners opt to plant Butterfly Flowers in the garden, where it proves to be a hardy perennial in zones 6+. If you live in Zone 5, you’ll find that Gaura is at least a hardy annual that has perennial potential, depending on the intensity of your winter.
Stratosphere Pink Butterfly Flower Care
Like many North American natives that have garnered attention, Butterfly Flower is hardy and low maintenance. Deadheading is not necessary, but the long flowering stems can get tangled. You may want to trim back the stems as they get too long, which will encourage new growth.
Keep the soil of containers evenly moist, only watering when the top inch is dry. Occasional fertilization is also a good idea for containers. Plants in the ground will require less water and fertilization.
Stratosphere Pink Butterfly Flower Spacing
Plant your Stratosphere™ Pink Picotee butterfly flowers 8-12” apart when planted in the landscape. They can be planted closer in containers, about 6-8” apart.
