Tillandsia stricta is the most common air plant sold. It grows so easily that it is a gateway plant for people who never thought they would be house plant growers. The gray-green coloring of the long foliage is a lovely addition to terrariums and open-container displays. Stricta Air Plant will bloom when it reaches full maturity. Sadly this also means that the plant will die soon.
Best Locations For Growing Stricta Air Plant
Stricta Air Plant will grow happily anywhere in the house where it can receive good airflow and humidity. Bathrooms and kitchens are the best situations if they have high enough light levels. There is no need to pot this plant, and it will move from location to location happily without losing leaves or slowing growth.
Stricta Air Plant Sunlight Requirements
Direct light or filtered bright light is what Stricta prefers. Lower light levels are tolerated for short periods. Direct light from a south-facing window may be too intense and cause the leaves to burn.
Stricta Air Plant Care
Air Plants do not require soil to get nutrients or anchor their roots. These plants filter the air for nutrients and moisture and will happily hang from other plants as added decoration or to give your room a feeling of the jungle. Tillandsia will produce pups or plantlets regularly. These pups can be left attached to the mother to form large masses, or they can be separated to be used on their own. When the pup is big enough to handle, gently twist the whole plant away from the mother to separate them.
Watering Stricta Air Plant
Rainwater, spring water, or filtered tap water is best for watering. Tap water should sit for 24 hours to dissipate the chlorine. Once a week, fill a sink or basin with room temperature water and submerge the whole plant for 30 minutes. Let the Air Plant drain upside down for 2 hours before returning it to its regular home. Mist Air Plants with distilled water every other day to increase humidity levels.
Feeding Stricta Air Plant
Air Plants do not need supplemental fertilizing and can get the nutrients they need from the air.
