Sun Gold Jumbo Tulip Bulbs are an easy source of strong mid-spring color, with huge, egg-shaped golden-yellow flowers held well above the foliage. Tulipa ‘Golden Parade’ is a Darwin hybrid that grows about 24 to 26 inches tall on sturdy stems suited to open garden beds and cutting. The gray-green foliage forms a clean base beneath the flowers. We appreciate that the jumbo 14+ cm bulbs give each planting a substantial start.
Darwin hybrid tulips are known for large flowers, strong stems, and better perennial performance than many other tulip classes. Sun Gold works well in foundation beds, mixed borders, cutting gardens, and deep patio containers where its height can be used behind shorter spring bulbs. The flowers open in mid spring and make excellent cut stems for indoor arrangements. In well-drained sites with a dry summer rest, established bulbs may return for several seasons in USDA zones 3 to 8.
Sun Gold Jumbo Tulip Bulbs Care
Plant in full sun to partial shade, although full sun generally supports the strongest stems and best repeat flowering. Choose a site with well-drained loamy, sandy, or amended clay soil with a slightly acidic to neutral soil pH. Set bulbs about 6 inches deep with the pointed end facing upward.
Water thoroughly after planting. Provide moderate moisture during active spring growth when rainfall is limited. Once the foliage yellows, allow the soil to become drier through summer dormancy. Apply a balanced bulb fertilizer at planting or as shoots emerge in spring, keeping concentrated fertilizer away from direct bulb contact.
Deadhead after the petals fall, but leave the green foliage in place until it yellows naturally so the bulb can replenish its reserves. Remove the leaves only after they have fully declined. A 2-inch winter mulch can help moderate temperature swings in colder regions, particularly during the first season.
Sun Gold Jumbo Tulip Bulbs Spacing
Space bulbs about 3 to 6 inches apart, planting more closely when creating a dense mass display. For containers, use a pot at least 12 inches deep with drainage holes and enough width to hold the bulbs without crowding. In very cold climates, move containers to a protected, unheated location during severe freezes.
Sun Gold Jumbo Tulip Bulbs Companion Plants
Pansies make a useful early-season companion because their low flowers can cover the soil beneath the taller tulip stems without competing for the main display. Boxwoods can provide an evergreen backdrop in formal or foundation beds, giving the golden flowers a clean setting in spring. For mixed containers, alyssum stays low around the rim, flowers in cool weather, and leaves the tulips enough vertical space to develop fully.
