Some plants get all the attention on a patio or in the landscape, and Mandevilla Sun Parasol Giant Red Emperor will stand out even among those. Mandevilla is a tropical climbing plant with giant deep red blooms that you can grow during summer and even as a houseplant in winter. Place it in a focal part of your landscape or in a container near a pole or trellis. Then train the long stems as they fill with glossy green leaves and large (2 to 3 inch) flowers.
Most mandevillas can grow to 10 feet long with little effort other than a place to climb and regular watering. In warm southern zones (10 and 11), plant Mandevilla Giant Red Emperor in full or part sun and it will continue to bloom outdoors with long-lasting red flowers from planting time until first frost. If you grow it in a container, bring it indoors for winter in most zones.
Sun Parasol® Giant Red Emperor Mandevilla Care
Place your Mandevilla in a warm, mostly sunny spot for best results. Give it fairly fertile garden soil or a quality potting mix. Water the plant regularly, not letting it dry out too much in summer. Regular, slow-release fertilizer can help keep it lush all summer. The plant prefers heat and might slow down once outdoor temperatures drop to 45 degrees.
You can bring your Mandevilla Sun Parasol Giant Red Emperor indoors for a winter rest and grow it as a houseplant. Try to expose it to at least indirect sun and water normally until it begins to drop leaves and stop flowering. Then, cut back on watering to give the plant a chance to rest in winter. It might drop some leaves, but this is normal. Keep the plant indoors until temperatures are above 60 degrees consistently and repot it in a slightly larger pot with a quality potting mix.
Sun Parasol® Giant Red Emperor Mandevilla Spacing
If you plant more than one Mandevilla together or as part of a container group, consider the plants’ mature spread of nearly 3 feet. Place plants 1 to 2 feet apart from each center. Try to provide a trellis or other object on which the trailing vine can climb.
