The foliage of the Sun Red Philodendron is truly spectacular. New growth emerges bright red, gradually mellowing into deep green leaves, creating a striking contrast with the vibrant new foliage. Philodendron selloum ‘Sun Red’ is a hybrid bred in nurseries, not found in nature. Selected for its brilliant colors and compact growth, it reaches only 1-2 feet in height when fully mature.
Best Locations For Growing Sun Red Philodendron
Position your Sun Red Philodendron where its changing colors can be appreciated. It makes an ideal tabletop plant when young, and as it matures to about 2 feet, it will look stunning in a plant stand as a floor specimen. While this Philodendron is not an aggressive sprawler, it grows well when trained on a short moss pole or trellis. All parts of the plant are toxic, so keep it out of reach of small children and pets.
Sun Red Philodendron Sunlight Requirements
Bright to medium indirect light levels are suitable for the Sun Red Philodendron. Early morning sun in an east-facing window is ideal, as fading and leaf scorch can occur with south or west-facing windows. Medium and lower light levels may slow growth and reduce the brilliance of the immature leaves.
Sun Red Philodendron Care
Ensure your pot has proper bottom drainage and use a well-draining potting mix for healthy growth. Improve the drainage of an indoor mix by adding perlite, grit, or fine orchid bark. Transplant this Philodendron to a larger pot when roots begin to emerge from the bottom or top of the container; spring or summer when growth is vigorous is the best time to repot.
Watering Sun Red Philodendron
Maintain consistent moisture by watering when the top 3 inches of potting mix are dry. The soil should feel like a wrung-out sponge, not waterlogged. Typically, once a week is sufficient during spring and summer, while in winter, you can extend watering to every two weeks. Sun Red Philodendron thrives in average indoor humidity levels of 40-50%.
Feeding Sun Red Philodendron
Fertilize with a balanced houseplant feed once a month from April to September. A liquid formulation, such as liquid seaweed or fish emulsion, is easy to apply during regular watering and typically acts quickly. Look for deodorized blends specifically designed for indoor use.

Plant Shipping
Below are some factors we consider when determining when to ship the plants depending on the timing of the order.
Winter to Early Spring
We ship only when it's warm enough to plant in your growing zone.
Sometimes plants aren't completely ready to sell and ship in early spring. We will wait until the plants are ready before shipping so you don't get a subpar product.
For Southern plants we will be able to ship much earlier than plants coming from our northern nursery.
Summer
If there is extreme heat we may delay shipping for a week or several weeks.
We review what areas the plants are traveling through as well as your location.
Fall into Winter
We’ll ship plants out all the way up to the end of the fall planting season!
