- Cascading plant with brilliant red flowers!
In the same family as Mandevilla, Dipladenias have the opposite habit of their cousins. Mandevilla is known for its climbing ability, large flowers and large lobular leaves whereas Dipladenias are known to dangle or cascade, do not need trellises or stakes, have a smaller more abundant flower, and shiny dark green pointed leaves. Sundenia Red is no exception with its brilliant red flowers that whirl open to reveal yellow orange throats. You will enjoy these as an annual in most areas of the United States.
Native to South American tropical regions, Zone 10a to 11b, it is treated as an annual in Zones 2-9. Plant these beauties out after the danger of the last frost has passed. Most gardeners find that planting in containers is easiest as these plants can be brought indoors before the first frost for year round color in a bright window. This is in contrast to mandevillas that will go dormant when brought inside only to spring back to life when temperatures warm and they are set outside again.
Sundenia Red Dipladenia Care
Dipladenia care is similar to mandevillas, water only when the top few inches of soil are dry. Soil pH is best at 6.6 to 7.8, but dipladenias will tolerate a slight variance of soil pH rather well. Fertilize every 3 to 4 weeks with a high phosphorus fertilizer for lush growth and continuous blooming. If you bring your plant indoors for the winter, do not continue to fertilize until it is back outside in the spring. Plants can be susceptible to scale and spider mites so watch for these and consider treating the container with a systemic pesticide before bringing it indoors.
Deadheading is not required as it self-cleans. Pruning is encouraged to promote branching and a fuller plant as it tends to lengthen out and dangle. All parts of the plant can ooze sap and it is considered toxic to humans and pets so care should be taken when pruning. Dipladenias grow best in 65 degree environments and will give you spring and summer long blooms when temperatures are ideal for it.
Sundenia Red Dipladenia Spacing
Spacing is not much of an issue as this plant is usually showcased alone in a container, but allow 12 to 18 inches of space if planted with other species. It reaches about 24 inches tall and 24 inches wide at maturity. Plant diseases rarely bother dipladenias. For a tropical look to your patio, window box or terrace, consider Sundenia Red Dipladenia as your next specimen plant.
