Sunpatiens are an improved hybrid of the native impatiens and Impatiens hawkeri that has taken the best attributes of both parents and created a sun loving annual for your spring garden. Large deep rose colored blooms perch above dark green, red-veined leaves creating a dramatic display wherever it is planted. You are going to want to try this beautiful annual this spring.
Wild impatiens are native to Indonesia, and I. hawkeri are native to New Guinea and both are perennial in Zones 10a to 11b. A tropical plant by nature, impatiens are grown as cool season annuals in most of the country. In Zones 3-9, plant them out after temperatures reach at least 45 degrees for best performance. Once temperatures warm, these lovely annuals will grow vigorously, filling your garden beds and containers with its bright blooms until the first frost.
SunPatiens® Compact Deep Rose Impatiens Care
Take care of Sunpatiens Compact Deep Rose by giving it a moist, well drained soil with an mildly acidic to neutral soil pH of 5.5 to 6.2 and a regular schedule of watering, although this variety of impatiens tolerates some dry periods and will not drop its flower buds when dried out for a short period of time. Feed it with a water soluble fertilizer every 3 to 4 weeks for best results. It is not prone to powdery mildew, and rabbits are not likely to feed on it. It is best when planted in full sun with some afternoon shade in extremely hot regions.
Deadheading is not required with Sunpatiens as they will drop spent flowers. Pinch back newly established plants when they are about 6 inches tall to promote branching and increased flower production. Pruning Sunpatiens may be necessary to keep them compact and within bounds when they are really happy where they are planted. Shear back about ⅓ of their volume for more compact growth and renewed flowering. They are heat tolerant and do not stop blooming when summer temperatures go up.
SunPatiens® Compact Deep Rose Impatiens Spacing
Space new plants about 10 to 12 inches apart. Sunpatiens can grow up to 30 inches tall and spread out 20 inches, and the more crowded they are, the taller they grow. This can cause them to get leggy and lay down when you are expecting an upright growth habit. Pair Sunpatiens with other sun loving annuals like lobelia, petunia, verbena, lantana, caladium, coleus, accent with ipomoea, or mass them out in your partial sun landscape to make their deep rose color pop.
