There is a new kid on the block, Sunstar Lavender Egyptian Star Flower! Sporting super large clusters of lavender, star shaped flowers suspended over dark green, deeply veined lance shaped leaves, this spring to fall blooming newcomer will brighten your landscape and bring all the pollinators into your garden.
Native to Africa and Yemen, Pentas lanceolata grows as a perennial woody shrub in Zones 10a to 11b. In Zones 2-9, it is frost sensitive annual that can be placed out in spring after the danger of the last frost has passed. It will bloom late spring and into the fall. This beautiful lavender flower makes a great addition to a butterfly garden where you will enjoy its frequent visitors.
Sunstar Lavender Egyptian Star Flower Care
While best grown in rich organic well drained soil, with a pH of 6.0 to 6.5, you can grow it in any well draining soil with the proper fertilizing program. Use of a slow release fertilizer will keep this annual in the easy to maintain category for you. A regular watering schedule with a water soluble fertilizer should be followed in dry weather, but allow the soil to dry out between waterings. This is a heat tolerant annual, and makes a great addition to your full sun landscape.
Deadheading is not required with Sunstar Lavender Pentas. However, to maintain a bright full look, prune or pinch back to encourage branching which will bring on more flowers. A regular pruning of errant branches will help it keep its shape lovely and fresh. This sun loving annual makes a great landscape, border and edging plant as well as adapting to containers very well. Bring containers indoors before frost and keep in a high light with high humidity for winter long blooms.
Sunstar Lavender Egyptian Star Flower Spacing
Spacing is important to help prevent insect infestation. Watch for spider mites and white flies and treat with a shower of insecticidal soap should any insect activity be noted. Reaching up to 22 inches tall and spreading out up to 24 inches, space your plantings about 10 to 14 inches apart to promote air circulation and increase plant health. Use this medium upright annual as a border to your taller perennial garden plants and grasses. Sunstar Lavender also makes a lovely cut flower for your smaller floral arrangements.
