Part of the fun in adding annuals to the garden bed or containers each year is filling in with bursts of color, and Pentas Sunstar Red is a cherry-red flowering award winner. A hybrid of Pentas lanceolata, Pentas Sunstar Red also is called the Egyptian Star Flower. Giant clusters of star-shaped flowers fill in all summer over dark green leaves.
This Pentas can add a touch of fanciness to fill containers, create borders or create a mass planting of deep red flowers. The flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, so the More Sunstar Reds, the better. The plant grows to about 18 to 22 inches high and up to 24 inches wide in an upright habit. It loves heat, resists common diseases and reblooms with no deadheading or other effort from gardeners. And you can cut the flowers to bring inside and enjoy in short flower arrangements.
Sunstar® Red Egyptian Star Flower Care
Choose a sunny or mostly sunny spot for Pentas Sunstar Red and in fertile, slightly acidic soil. Water the pentas after planting and give it average water during the growing season. Container-grown plants might need more frequent watering than those in the ground, so water when the potting mix feels dry. Fertilize Sunstar Red with a controlled-release fertilizer after planting, and once during summer to help boost its health through fall.
Pentas Sunstar Red needs little to no attention other than watering. It can take hot summer days, resist diseases common to other plants, and needs no pruning. There is no need to deadhead, or remove spent blooms. The plant is an annual in nearly all growing zones, but if in a container, you can bring it inside to enjoy the final blooms or cut the stalks and place them in a short vase.
Sunstar® Red Egyptian Star Flower Spacing
This versatile annual needs a little room to fill out, so space plants 10 to 14 inches apart, depending on the effect you want. Place them closer to 10 inches in containers or mass plantings to fill in fully or 14 inches apart for a border.
