The Superbells series of Calibrachoa brought the gardening world a superior hybrid for your containers or your garden bed. The hundreds of bright colored blooms dot bright green foliage and spread out to completely fill a hanging basket or container on their own, or complement other sun loving annuals beautifully. Can’t get much better, right? How about a double flowered calibrachoa to add further intrigue to your garden? Introducing Superbells Double Ruby Calibrachoa!

Long thought to be a petunia, this native of the Atlantic Coast of South America, Zones 9a through 11b, is related to the petunia but is actually a species of its own. In the 1990s it was hybridized to improve its performance in cultivated gardens and it has become a favorite of gardeners in Zones 3-8 as a long season annual. Unlike its parent plant, hybrid calibrachoa is heat tolerant and does not flush out of bloom when the heat is on making it the perfect annual for your landscape or container garden.

Superbells® Double Ruby Calibrachoa Care

Calibrachoa do not like wet feet, so well draining soil with a soil pH of 5.5 to 6.2 is a must. If you want to plant in your landscape but your soil stays wet, consider using raised beds to control drainage. Use of a controlled release fertilizer when first planting out, and following up with a water soluble fertilizer every couple of weeks will give you the results you are looking for. Heat and drought tolerant, calibrachoas require water only when it remains dry when planted in your landscape and on a regular schedule for containers and hanging baskets.

Deadheading is not necessary as calibrachoa hybrids rarely go to seed and will drop spent flowers on its own. Prune lightly when first planting it out to encourage branching. Light shearing or pinching back may be required during the long bloom season if the plant gets out of its bounds or becomes leggy. Cut it back about ⅓ of its growth, water and fertilize, and within a week or so it will bounce back with repeat blooms and plenty of new growth.

Superbells® Double Ruby Calibrachoa Spacing

Growing up to 12 inches tall and spreading out up to 24 inches wide, this versatile sun loving container plant can also trail up to 24 inches. Space plants out 8 to 12 inches apart to give room to grow. Can be mixed with other sun loving annuals like verbena, lobelia and sutera, or choose one or more of the additional 41 colors of Superbells series for an exciting display of color from spring to fall.
