Looking like miniature petunias, calibrachoa are actually a relative of petunias and are a member of the nightshade family. They are native to South America and grow as perennials in Zones 9a through 11b. Other regions use these as annuals, planted out after the danger of the last frost has passed in Zones 2-8. Although they can be planted in your landscape, most gardeners find it easiest to maintain calibrachoa in hanging baskets or large containers as they do not tolerate soggy soil at all.
Superbells® White Calibrachoa Care
Well draining soil, with a pH of 5.0 to 5.5, will make calibrachoa happy, as will an application of a well-balanced NPK fertilizer, like a 24-12-7, when it is first planted. They are heavy feeders so you will want to develop a routine to keep them healthy and lush. As a rule, calibrachoas do not tolerate much variance in soil pH so if your plants start to yellow, check your soil and adjust as needed. If pH is out of specs, you may need to add some chelated iron to help the plant take up the nutrients it needs to bounce back.
Deadheading is not necessary as the spent blooms will drop off on their own. As with most annuals, though, they will appreciate an occasional grooming to refresh it, promote branching and more flowers. Time this pruning with an application of a water soluble fertilizer and watch your plant bounce back in about a week. Calibrachoa will appreciate full sun in cooler climates and some light shade in the afternoon in the hotter climates.
Superbells® White Calibrachoa Spacing
Space your plants about 8 to 12 inches apart in your containers or landscape. Calibrachoas are low growing mounding/trailing plants that reach about 12 inches tall and spread out up to 24 inches wide. They will trail down the edge of planters about 18 inches in an attractive cascading habit. Placing these in the foreground of garden beds, or as the foundation plant in containers will take advantage of this trailing habit.
