Petunias are native to South America, Zones 10a to 11b, and are heat loving perennials there. In Zones 2-9 they are used as heat and cold tolerant annuals to great advantage. A well-loved addition to cottage gardens throughout the world, they are hands down the most utilized flowering annual in hanging baskets and containers as well. This award winning, top seller will be a great addition to your garden this spring.
Supertunia® Lovie Dovie Petunia Care
Petunias thrive on little maintenance from you once you have given them the growing conditions that they crave. Growing in full sun to light shade for best flowering, they require an average watering schedule when in containers and only when dry in landscape plantings. Apply a slow release fertilizer when you first plant them out, and use a water soluble fertilizer if you have a long bloom season, or have planted them in containers, for best performance. A slightly acidic soil pH of 5.5 to 5.8 will suit them just fine.
Deadheading is not necessary as this plant will clean up after itself. Give it a light shear from time to time to encourage branching and promote more flowers, and prune back up to ⅓ of the volume of the plant should it become lank and leggy. It will rebound in just a week or so with renewed vigor and more flowers. Quickly remove any dead or yellowing leaves and adjust your fertilizing program to prevent this and reduce chances of disease.
Supertunia® Lovie Dovie Petunia Spacing
Petunias can grow up to 12 inches tall and spread out up to 24 inches wide, so give them space between plants of 12 to 24 inches. This gives them room to grow and promotes air circulation to aid in disease prevention. Supertunias are an improved hybrid that is naturally disease resistant and with a little forethought on your part, you will be rewarded with healthy green growth and multitudes of flowers from spring to fall.
