This improved variety of petunia is going to be your go to for a full spring to fall display of lovely flowers that literally blanket the medium green foliage. Light to dark raspberry pink with blotches of white flowers make a wonderful companion to white and yellow annuals in a hanging basket, as this Petunia will cascade over the edge of the container for a wonderful waterfall appearance. Whether you use it in a basket or a patio container, or mass it out in your landscape or garden bed, you will enjoy the long season of color that Raspberry Rush Petunia will bring you. Bees, butterflies and hummingbirds will be frequent visitors to your container gardens when you plant Supertunias Raspberry Rush Petunia.
Native to South America where it grows out in open grasslands and scrub, petunias are a temperate season perennial, preferring to grow where winters are warm. Hardy to Zones 10 to 11, it is widely grown as an annual by most gardeners in the Lower 48 states. A fast growing annual, this plant will quickly fill whatever container you plant it in and then some. Supertunia hybrids take the best of the parent plant and add heat tolerance and continuous blooming to the mix, resulting in the perfect annual for all your spring to summer gardening needs.
Supertunia® Raspberry Rush Petunia Care
Petunias are remarkably unfussy about care and maintenance once they are established. They are not drought tolerant so will appreciate a regular watering routine when not in the open for rainfall, and should not be allowed to dry out. They prefer a slightly acidic garden soil with a pH range of 5.5 to 5.8 and are heavy feeders. Use a controlled release balanced fertilizer like a 10-10-10 when first planting out after the danger of the frost has passed, then follow up with a water soluble fertilizer feeding every 4 to 6 weeks during the bloom season. Plant in full sun with some afternoon shade, especially in hot summer sun regions, giving at least 4 to 6 hours of sun for optimal flowering.
Deadheading is not required for repeat blooming, as this plant self cleans its spent flowers, but if your plant starts looking tired or getting leggy in mid summer, shear it back to about ⅓ of its volume for additional branching and renewed flowering and vigor, following up with a good application of water soluble fertilizer for an additional boost. If you do deadhead, cut spent flower calyx back to the first set of leaves to keep the plant trimmed and neat. This will stimulate even more flowering.
Supertunia® Raspberry Rush Petunia Spacing
Space your plants about 12 to 24 inches apart. This plant grows to about 12 inches tall and spreads out to 24 inches wide, and then it can trail up to 30 inches. It looks fabulous in combination with other warm and cool colored annuals in your hanging baskets, patio containers or when massed out in your landscape or garden bed. Add a spike of ornamental grass in the center to provide a vertical interest and you will get many compliments all season long.
