This shows how the plant is typically used in a container combo — Thriller (tall focal point), Filler (mid-height mass), or Spiller (trailing over the edge).
Tip: match plant habit to the role for the best designs.
Surefire Cascade™ Red Begonia changes the way you use begonias in containers. Instead of standing upright, it spills outward and down, reaching 12–18 inches tall with a generous 24–36 inch spread. Thick stems carry large, saturated red blooms over a canopy of glossy green leaves, and the flowers keep coming from planting until frost without deadheading. We especially like it for big hanging baskets that need fullness fast and color that doesn’t stall in heat.
This selection was developed for vigor and weather tolerance, and it shows. Blooms hold through summer storms and wind without shredding. It performs in full sun or full shade, which allows you to repeat it across different exposures for a unified look. The cascading habit makes it more versatile than traditional upright types. In the landscape, it works as a seasonal groundcover, forming a dense mat of foliage and flowers that suppresses gaps.
Surefire Cascade™ Red Begonia Care
Plant Surefire Cascade™ Red Begonia in full sun, part sun, or full shade. In hotter climates, afternoon shade helps preserve foliage quality. Use a rich, well-draining soil with a slightly acidic pH between 5.5 and 6.5. Water thoroughly, and allow the top inch of soil to dry before watering again; avoid letting containers sit in saucers of water. Incorporate a slow-release fertilizer at planting, and supplement with a diluted liquid feed every two to three weeks in containers to sustain bloom production.
Deadheading is not required. If stems become too long by midsummer, trim lightly to encourage branching and a denser canopy. In zones 10–11 this begonia may persist year-round, but elsewhere it should be treated as a warm-season annual.
Surefire Cascade™ Red Begonia Spacing
In landscape beds, space plants 12–24 inches apart to allow them to form a continuous groundcover. For hanging baskets or large patio containers, use one plant per 12–14 inch basket, or combine with upright snapdragon and trailing bacopa for a layered container display. In shaded garden borders, pair with impatiens and caladium for a lush, season-long planting.
