Susan Williams-Ellis™ English Shrub Rose is a pure white English rose with exceptional disease resistance, a valuable asset in the rose world. Rosa 'Ausquirk' is a sport of ‘The Mayflower,’ carrying the same remarkable health but in luminous, fully double white blooms packed with up to 140 petals. The upright, bushy plant matures around 4 to 5 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, forming a tidy, vertical presence rather than a sprawling shrub. Flowers arrive in steady flushes from early summer through frost, each carrying a classic Old Rose fragrance with real depth.
This selection was discovered at David Austin’s Shropshire nursery and introduced in 2010. It is named for Susan Williams-Ellis, founder of Portmeirion Pottery and an admirer of English roses. The buds open from soft blush hints to a clear, true white that holds well in sun. Its twiggy, upright framework makes it ideal for structured rose borders, low hedging, or repeated groups where a clean white anchor is needed. We recommend this variety for gardeners who want the romance of heirloom form without constant spraying and coddling.
Susan Williams-Ellis™ English Shrub Rose Care
Provide full sun for strongest flowering, though this variety tolerates partial sun in hotter regions. Plant in organically enriched garden soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH between 6.0 and 7.0, making sure drainage is reliable but not excessively dry. Water thoroughly when the upper layer of soil begins to dry, keeping moisture consistent during active growth. Feed with a rose-specific fertilizer as new growth emerges and again after the first heavy bloom cycle to maintain repeat performance. A spring topdressing of compost supports soil structure and steady nutrition.
In late winter, shape the plant by shortening main canes and removing thin, crowded stems to encourage sturdy new growth. Throughout the season, remove spent blooms to speed up rebloom and keep the shrub looking fresh. In very cold regions, apply a protective mulch layer after the ground cools to insulate the crown. Container-grown plants benefit from being moved to a sheltered location during prolonged freezes.
Susan Williams-Ellis™ English Shrub Rose Spacing
Space shrubs about 3 feet apart on center for a dense hedge effect, or allow up to 4 feet between plants in mixed borders to showcase their upright form. Choose a container at least 20 inches wide with ample depth for root development and stable moisture. Pair with delphinium, hardy geranium, and boxwood for vertical contrast and structure in formal designs.
