Swedish Flag Allium Duet has an unusual bright blue-and-yellow color pairing in late-spring before most summer perennials have reached their peak. The mix combines golden-yellow Allium moly with true blue Allium caeruleum, each forming rounded clusters of small flowers above narrow green foliage. Plants reach about 12 to 18 inches tall, making the blend easy to place along walkways, at the front of borders, or through rock gardens. This duet is wonderful planted in broad drifts, where the two colors intermingle rather than forming separate blocks.

Both species are perennial alliums that return from bulbs and flower from late spring into early summer. Their blooms attract bees and other pollinators, but their onion-family scent typically deters deer and rabbits. The compact height works well around taller spring bulbs and emerging perennials, and the flowers can also be cut for small arrangements. This mix is well suited to sunny borders, gravel gardens, raised beds, and patio containers where the bulbs can remain dry during summer dormancy.

Swedish Flag Allium Duet Bulbs Care

Plant in full sun with at least 6 hours of direct light for strong stems and the best flowering. Use well-drained soil and position the bulbs about 3 to 4 inches deep, with the pointed end facing upward. A slightly acidic to neutral soil pH is suitable. Clay soil can work if amended so excess water drains away readily.

Irrigate when the soil begins to dry during active spring growth. Once the foliage starts yellowing after bloom, reduce watering as the bulbs enter dormancy. Apply a balanced granular bulb fertilizer as shoots emerge in spring, or top-dress lightly with compost in fall.

Leave the foliage in place until it yellows and collapses naturally so the bulbs can store energy for the following year. Spent flower stems may be removed after bloom or left standing for dried texture. In colder areas, a light layer of mulch can be applied after the ground cools, then pulled back in spring.

Space bulbs about 2 to 3 inches apart for a dense display, or widen the spacing to around 6 inches when you prefer more room between clumps. For containers, use a pot at least 10 to 12 inches wide with several drainage holes and a free-draining potting mix. Containers in the coldest zones benefit from a sheltered winter position against a wall or inside an unheated garage.

Catmint is a strong perennial partner because it shares a preference for sun and well-drained soil and adds a soft mound beneath the upright allium flowers. Potentilla can provide a low shrub layer in sunny beds and continues the flowering season after the alliums finish. In containers, pansies can supply earlier spring color at the base, then fade as the allium stems rise above them.
