Grow a deeply orange vine each summer by adding Thunbergia Tangerine Slice A Peel (T. alata) to a patio container or area of your landscape. This pretty vining annual reaches up to 8 feet long of trailing stems packed with bicolor red and orange flowers. Also called Black-Eyed Susan Vine, this thunbergia thrives in full sun or part shade.

From planting time through first frost, your thunbergia will climb up a trellis or patio post or drape prettily from a hanging basket. The plant is just as much at home in a container as it is in the landscape, so it’s a versatile addition to any summer garden. It can take sun and heat and keep on blooming and spreading. And it’s an easy-care vine, with no need to deadhead flowers after they’re done blooming.

Tangerine Slice A-Peel® Black-Eyed Susan Vine Care

Thunbergia can grow in most average soil types and is a good voice for containers. They require little fuss, other than some help guiding the trailing stems where desired. Plant it in spring after the danger of frost has passed. The plant does not require lots of help from fertilizer, but one application of a controlled-release fertilizer at planting time can help boost growth and flowering. Container-grown plants might benefit from one more feeding mid-summer.

Give your thunbergia average water as needed and avoid over fertilizing, which can actually hurt flowering. There is no need to prune or deadhead the vine. Just enjoy and even share with family the calm task of helping the vine trail up its hanging basket chains or winding through a trellis or small fence.

Tangerine Slice A-Peel® Black-Eyed Susan Vine Spacing

Be sure to consider the full length or spread of Thunbergia Tangerine Slice A Peel when planting. Although it reaches about 18 to 24 inches wide, the stems can grow to 96 inches. Space more than one plant about 16 inches apart to give each room to grow.
