Growing Zones
Tapestry Rhododendron immediately catches the eye with its dome-shaped clusters of bright purple flowers, each bloom flaunting a deeper blotch in the throat. This striking color display appears in late spring, perched atop leathery, dark green leaves that give the shrub a neat, compact form. Generally reaching around four feet tall in a decade, Tapestry Rhododendron remains a manageable size in the landscape. Its ability to deliver bright color and maintain an orderly silhouette makes it a sought-after accent for gardens big or small.
Beyond the appealing blooms, Tapestry Rhododendron offers year-round evergreen foliage, providing a steady touch of greenery even when the flowers are gone. This elepidote rhododendron was bred to tolerate cool climates, often withstanding winter temperatures down to -20°F. It also adapts nicely to partial sunlight or spots with dappled shade, where it can serve as a bold focal point or harmonize in groupings for mass plantings, borders, or woodland edges.
Tapestry Rhododendron Care
Provide Tapestry Rhododendron a moisture-rich, acidic soil that drains well, incorporating organic matter at planting time to bolster nutrients. Aim for a pH in the range of 4.5 to 6.0, as alkaline soils can cause leaf yellowing. Water deeply once or twice a week until the root system establishes, then switch to a regular watering schedule to keep the soil evenly moist (but not waterlogged). Filtered morning sun is ideal, with shade in the hottest part of the day. Applying an acid-loving fertilizer in early spring promotes healthy growth and abundant flowering.
For pruning, it’s best to remove old blooms soon after they fade, which can encourage fresh leaf growth without sacrificing the following year’s flower buds. If you need to shape or rejuvenate the plant, do so right after spring flowering, cutting back lightly to maintain a tidy outline. Plants grown in containers can also benefit from a light trim, plus added winter protection in colder zones. Watch for new buds in late winter and protect them from strong winds.
Tapestry Rhododendron Spacing
When creating a hedge or multi-plant grouping, leave about four feet between Tapestry Rhododendron shrubs, so they can fully develop their spreading form without crowding. If container-growing, use a pot several inches wider than the root ball to accommodate the shallow but wide-reaching root system, making sure good drainage and proper airflow around the plant.
