Teddy Bear® Southern Magnolia brings the grandeur of Southern magnolia to small and mid-size spaces. Its naturally tight, pyramidal shape stays neat without constant pruning, while glossy, deep green leaves with warm, velvety brown undersides look tailored year-round. In summer, large, creamy white flowers perfume the air and draw every eye to your entry, patio, or focal bed.
Compact yet substantial, this selection matures to a comfortable neighborhood scale—ideal for flanking a front walk, softening a corner of the house, or creating a refined evergreen screen. Use one as a specimen or repeat several for an elegant, four-season backdrop with classic southern character.
Teddy Bear® Southern Magnolia Care
Plant in full sun to light partial shade (6+ hours of sun for best flowering) and moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Mix in compost at planting and mulch 2–3 inches deep, keeping mulch a few inches off the trunk. Water regularly the first 1–2 years to establish; once rooted in, it becomes moderately drought tolerant but appreciates deep soakings during hot, dry spells.
Feed in early spring with a slow-release fertilizer formulated for acid-loving evergreens. Pruning needs are minimal—touch up in late winter to maintain the pyramidal outline, and remove any damaged or crossing branches. Avoid heavy soil disturbance over roots and provide wind protection in exposed sites. Hardy in USDA Zones 7–9.
Teddy Bear® Southern Magnolia Spacing
Expect about 16–20 ft tall and 10–12 ft wide at maturity. For a dense evergreen screen, space 8–10 ft on center; for individual specimens, allow 10–12 ft of open space so the symmetrical form can develop fully. Keep at least 5–6 ft from walls, drives, and paths for airflow and maintenance access.
In large containers, choose a sturdy 24–28"+ diameter pot with excellent drainage and place planters 3–4 ft apart so foliage doesn’t overlap.
