The Thanksgiving cactus has been a popular houseplant for decades, blooming right when days get short and you’re craving color indoors. It stays pleasantly compact at about 6–12 inches tall and 1–2 feet wide, with flat, segmented stems that drape as it matures. Thanksgiving cactus, Schlumbergera truncata, is often sold as crab cactus, false Christmas cactus, holiday cactus, or winter cactus. We love it as a yearly tradition plant because once you learn its bloom routine, it tends to show up on time.

Best Locations For Growing Thanksgiving Cactus

A bright kitchen, living room side table, or an east-facing window where temperatures stay steady is ideal for bud set and bloom longevity. Keep it away from heat vents and doors that swing cold air inside, since quick changes can make buds drop. This plant is generally considered non-toxic to pets, though nibbling can still cause mild stomach upset.

Thanksgiving Cactus Sunlight Requirements

Give it bright, indirect or filtered light, especially from spring through fall. In the weeks leading up to bloom, brighter indirect light helps, but harsh direct sun can scorch the segments, particularly in a south-facing window.

Thanksgiving Cactus Plant Care

Use a humus-rich, airy mix that drains fast, such as potting soil cut with orchid bark and perlite. It prefers being slightly snug in its pot, so repot only every couple of years, ideally after blooming or in spring. For reliable buds, expose it to night temps around 55–65°F and at least 13 hours of uninterrupted darkness nightly for about eight weeks in fall, then keep the plant in one spot once buds form.

Watering Thanksgiving Cactus

Water thoroughly, and let the top 1–2 inches of soil dry before watering again, keeping the mix evenly moist but never waterlogged. If your home runs dry in winter, a little extra humidity helps keep segments plump and reduces bud drop.

Feeding Thanksgiving Cactus

Feed with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer at half strength every 2–4 weeks from spring through early fall to support growth and future blooms. Pause fertilizing during flowering and winter rest, then resume when you see fresh new growth.
