Deeply cupped, peony-like blooms in saturated fuchsia-pink set The Ingenious Mr. Fairchild® English Shrub Rose apart from softer pastel English roses. Rosa 'AUStijus' forms a balanced, mounded shrub reaching about 4 feet tall and 4 feet wide. Each 3 to 3½-inch flower is packed with over 40 crisp, upright petals that hold their shape beautifully. The reverse side carries subtle lavender and mauve tones, giving the blooms dimension even from a distance. Repeat flushes from late spring into fall keep the plant consistently in flower rather than peaking once.
The Ingenious Mr. Fairchild® was bred by David Austin in 2003 and named for Thomas Fairchild, who created the first recorded flower hybrid. The bush is rounded and well-branched, presenting flowers neatly above semi-glossy dark green foliage. A strong fruity fragrance defines its personality, blending notes of raspberry, peach, lemon, and a hint of mint. It works beautifully as a focal point in mixed borders, planted in groups for a low flowering hedge, or grown in a large container near a seating area where the scent can be appreciated. The blooms also make excellent cut flowers thanks to their substance and full form.
The Ingenious Mr. Fairchild® English Shrub Rose Care
Plant in full sun, ideally with at least six hours of direct light daily, in a site with good air circulation. This rose thrives in fertile, loamy soil enriched with compost and prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH around 6.0–7.0. Water deeply when the top few inches of soil feel dry, soaking the root zone rather than sprinkling lightly, and avoid waterlogged conditions. Apply a balanced rose fertilizer in early spring as growth begins and again after the first major bloom cycle to support repeat flowering. A layer of organic mulch helps regulate soil temperature and maintain even moisture.
Prune in late winter while dormant, shortening main canes by about one-third and removing thin or inward-facing growth to maintain its rounded shape. Deadhead spent blooms during the season to encourage quicker rebloom. In colder zones, mound soil or mulch around the base after the ground freezes to protect the crown. Container plants benefit from winter protection in an unheated garage or sheltered location.
The Ingenious Mr. Fairchild® English Shrub Rose Spacing
Space plants about 3 to 4 feet apart on center to allow the shrub to develop its full, symmetrical form without crowding. For containers, start with a pot at least 18–20 inches wide and deep to accommodate root growth and seasonal feeding. Pair with sweet alyssum, verbena, or calibrachoa to enhance the rich pink tones.
Why It’s Called That
The Ingenious Mr. Fairchild®
Named after Thomas Fairchild, the gardener who created the first recorded artificial flower hybrid in 1716.
