The Lady of the Lake English Shrub Rose is a rare repeat-flowering rambler with a bright citrus fragrance, bringing light pink sprays back again and again instead of fading after one grand performance. Rosa ‘AUSherbert’ carries clusters of semi-double, 2-inch blooms that open soft blush and reveal golden stamens at the center, giving the plant an airy, almost wild grace. The name nods to the ruler of Avalon from Arthurian legend, and to Sir Walter Scott’s poem, which suits its storybook look. The long, slender stems are flexible and easy to train, so it drapes beautifully over an arch or fence.

The Lady of the Lake reaches up to 12 feet with support and has a lighter presence than many climbers, making it ideal for smaller structures or front-of-house trellises. Flowering comes in generous waves from late spring onward, with bees happily working the open blooms. Foliage emerges with a subtle bronze tint before settling into healthy green, and overall vigor is strong without becoming unruly. Use it to soften pergola posts, dress up a 10-foot wall, or run it along a low fence for a flowering screen. We recommend planting it where you can walk beneath it and catch that fresh, fruity scent on warm evenings.

The Lady of the Lake® English Shrub Rose Care

Grow it in full sun to part sun; morning light is especially helpful for keeping foliage clean and bloom production high. Plant into soil that drains well, and aim for a slightly acidic to neutral pH of 6.0–7.0. Set the rootball so it sits level with the surrounding soil, then water in slowly to settle the planting area. During the first season, keep the root zone from drying out completely while it builds its framework. Feed in spring with a rose fertilizer, then give a lighter follow-up after the first strong flush to support repeat flowering.

Guide new canes onto a trellis or wires as they lengthen, spacing them out to prevent tangling. In late winter, remove a portion of the oldest canes at the base and shorten side shoots to keep flowering wood close to the structure. Deadhead lightly after a flush if you want faster repeat, but leaving some blooms to finish is fine when coverage is the main goal. In colder pockets of Zone 5, a mulch ring at the base helps buffer winter swings.

The Lady of the Lake® English Shrub Rose Spacing

Allow about 6–8 feet of horizontal room when planting along a wall or fence so the canes can be fanned out for even coverage. For a large container, choose a pot at least 24 inches wide and provide a sturdy obelisk or small trellis from day one. Pair it with creeping thyme, coreopsis, and upright sedum to keep the base bright and tidy while the rose climbs overhead.

Why It’s Called That

The Lady of the Lake®

Named for the ruler of Avalon in Arthurian legend, this rose also honors the title character of Sir Walter Scotts famous poem.
