“Like a sonnet’s lines of love, the pale-yellow petals fell about her.” David Austen’s The Poet's Wife English Rose features large, cupped rosettes of soft butter-yellow petals accompanied by lustrous forest green foliage. Its showy blooms can be assembled into bouquets, enhancing any home/office with their cheerful color and delightful citrusy fragrance. Flowering from late summer until fall, this perennial’s perfume mesmerizes local pollinators including the bees. Otherwise known as Rosa The Poet's Wife ('Auswhisper') and English Shrub Rose Bred By David Austin PAT. PP2736, this shrub grows to a maximum height and spread of 3 to 4 feet, making it an excellent option to grow in beds, borders, and containers.

Cold hardy in zones 5-10, this shrub, The Poet's Wife English Rose offers interest from spring until fall. Possessing a bushy growth habit, the stems often bend from the weight of its lush blooms, adding not only color and texture to a landscape but movement as well. Plant this lovely English shrub rose with bee balm, hyssop, and foxglove, which can deter wandering deer. With European ancestry, this bundle of yellow blossoms emanates a unique aroma with sweet and citrusy notes.

The Poet's Wife English Rose Care

To encourage the repeated blooming of its lush yellow blossoms, The Poet's Wife English Rose, needs a spot that gets at least 6 hours of full sun. An east-facing location that receives morning sun would be perfect. Dig a hole a little larger than this shrub’s root mass and add a little compost to the soil you have removed. The soil should be rich, moist, and well draining. Plant the rose and then backfill with compost/soil. Apply a couple of inches of mulch around the base, leaving some space between the main stem. This rose should receive 1 to 2 inches of rain or supplemental irrigation per week. Apply a balanced (10-10-10) fertilizer in early spring and follow up biweekly during the growing season with a formula for blooming plants (~4-8-10).

Prune The Poet's Wife English Rose in early spring. Remove damaged, dead, and diseased canes. Cut back all stems by a third. After the flowering season commences, remove spent blossoms to encourage blooming and discourage disease.

The Poet's Wife English Rose Spacing

Grow The Poet's Wife English Rose in borders and beds. For a big impact, plant en masse and space shrubs 3 to 4 feet apart. Plant alongside other companion plants such as geraniums, sweet alyssum, and lavender. In a container, this English shrub rose works well as a thriller.
