With climbing branches smothered in large, gossamer-edged pink blooms, The Wedgwood Rose English Shrub Rose is a standout for vertical spaces. Its strong basal shoots, climb 8–10 feet to cover a wall, fence, or obelisk with soft rose-pink flowers. Each bloom is full and cupped with delicately lighter outer petals that give a refined, porcelain effect. The fragrance is medium-strong and fruity with a subtle clove note that deepens in warm weather.
Rosa ‘AUSjosiah’ was introduced in 2009 and named to honor the 250th anniversary of the Wedgwood pottery company. Flowers arrive in repeat flushes from early summer into fall, often in small clusters along the canes. Dark green, glossy foliage provides a handsome backdrop and supports the large blooms well. Though vigorous, it remains manageable and can also be grown as a tall shrub if left untrained. It performs best when given structure to climb and room to show off.
The Wedgwood Rose English Shrub Rose Care
Plant in full sun for the strongest flowering and richest color, ideally in a sheltered position protected from harsh winds. Prepare a deep planting area with well-drained garden soil improved with organic matter, and avoid replanting directly where older roses recently grew. Water thoroughly after planting and keep moisture consistent while the plant establishes, ensuring excess water drains away freely. Feed in early spring as growth begins and again after the first major flush to encourage repeat bloom.
In late winter, shorten side shoots and remove any weak or crossing canes while preserving the main structural stems. Tie long, flexible canes horizontally along supports to encourage more flowering laterals. Remove spent blooms to tidy the plant and promote additional flushes. In colder regions, mound mulch around the base after the ground cools to protect the lower canes.
The Wedgwood Rose English Shrub Rose Spacing
Allow at least 5–6 feet of horizontal space when training along a fence or wall so air circulates freely. If growing as a large shrub, space plants about 4–5 feet apart. Pair it with clematis, ajuga, and climbing honeysuckle to extend the vertical display with contrasting fragrance and form.
