Tiny Tower® Dwarf Alberta Spruce adds refined structure to small spaces. Picea glauca var. conica 'MonRon' grows in a dense, pyramidal form with bright green new needles that mature to gray-green. It reaches about 4 to 6 feet tall and only 2 feet wide, making it useful where a wider conifer would crowd the planting. Our designers often use it in pairs near an entry or as a single patio container because the narrow shape stays tidy without much trimming.
This dwarf selection of Alberta spruce is slow growing and naturally compact, so it brings structure to formal gardens, foundation beds, and winter containers. The fine needles create a softer texture than many broadleaf evergreens while still giving year-round color. It performs best in cool-summer climates and benefits from airflow around the plant, especially when placed near walls or hardscape. Use it as an accent, low hedge, container specimen, or clipped topiary where a clean evergreen outline is needed.
Tiny Tower® Dwarf Alberta Spruce Care
Plant Tiny Tower® Dwarf Alberta Spruce in full sun to partial sun. It tolerates a range of well-drained soils, including average garden soil, with slightly acidic to neutral pH preferred. Avoid compacted, soggy sites and leave a few feet of space from structures so the foliage can dry after rain or watering.
Water deeply during the first growing season when the top 2 inches of soil are dry. Once established, water during dry spells and extended heat waves, so the root ball does not completely dry out. Fertilize before new growth begins in spring with a slow-release evergreen fertilizer, and rinse the foliage occasionally during hot, dry weather to discourage spider mites.
Prune only as needed to remove dead tips or to lightly refine the shape. When trimming is necessary, cut only the current season’s new growth rather than bare older wood. In exposed winter sites, protect container plants from drying wind and keep the root ball from going completely dry during mild breaks in weather.
Tiny Tower® Dwarf Alberta Spruce Spacing
Space Tiny Tower® Dwarf Alberta Spruce 2 feet apart for a tight formal row, or 3 to 4 feet apart when each plant should keep its individual outline. Use a container at least 16 to 20 inches wide with drainage holes, sizing up as roots fill the pot. Place pots where they receive strong light and are sheltered from harsh winter wind, and rotate quarterly for even growth.
For companion planting, pair Tiny Tower® with boxwoods, spirea, catmint, and sedum for a mix of evergreen structure, flowers, and drought-tolerant texture. In containers, plant alyssum or dianthus around the base where full sun and well-drained soil suit the entire planting.
