Growing Zones
Top Hat Blueberry is a cross between Vaccinium Corybosum (highbush) and Vaccinium Angustifolium (wild lowbush) varieties. This shrub produces numerous white blossoms in the spring that become attractive, pea-size and larger light blueberries in early summer.
The dwarf size of this deciduous plant makes it perfect for container gardens. It can also be used in a mixed shrub or perennial border or to create a low hedge along walkways and patios. Vaccinium angustifolium 'Top Hat' only reaches between 1 and 2 feet in height and width. Vaccinium angustifolium 'Top Hat is self-pollinating, but you’ll have a larger harvest if you plant more than one to ensure maximum pollination.
Top Hat Blueberry Care
Grow Top Hat Blueberry in full sun to partial shade conditions in USDA plant hardiness zones 3 to 7. Like most blueberry plants, this shrub prefers to be grown in acidic soils. Bees and butterflies will be attracted to the flowers and birds will be attracted to the delicious fruit. You’ll probably have to cover the ripening berries with netting to prevent the birds from devouring them before you do. Blueberries have shallow roots, so water during unusually dry periods. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer in early spring if desired.
Top Hat Blueberry Spacing
Space individual plants 2 or 3 feet apart. Top Hat Blueberry is noted for having good resistance to phytophthora root rot.
