Totally Tempted® Richly Red™ Cuphea (Cuphea procumbens) displays a bold sweep of crimson flowers with purple centers from early summer through frost. Its low, arching habit remains around a foot tall, giving it a neat, contained look. This heat-tolerant selection excels under summer sun without wilting. It outperforms many common annuals by providing constant color in gardens and containers.
This cuphea has a compact shape and tidy foliage, which require little upkeep. Cuphea, native to parts of the Americas, often attracts hummingbirds to its tubular blooms. This tender perennial or annual suits mass plantings, borders, and container displays. It exhibits good resistance to diseases and tolerates short dry spells.
Totally Tempted® Richly Red™ Cuphea Care
Place it in well-draining soil with moderate moisture, adding compost at planting time for extra nutrients. A balanced, water-soluble fertilizer applied monthly sustains robust growth. This variety thrives in full sun to partial shade, especially when shielded from extreme afternoon heat. A slightly acidic to neutral soil pH typically supports healthy roots.
Remove spent flowers occasionally to encourage a steady show of new buds. Pinching stems promotes a fuller shape, while light trimming preserves a neat outline. In mild regions, protect plants in winter by covering them or moving containers indoors if temperatures drop below freezing. Trim back spindly growth in early spring to prompt fresh stems and abundant buds.
Totally Tempted® Richly Red™ Cuphea Spacing
Position plants about 10 to 12 inches apart for uniform coverage in beds and groupings. For a dramatic container feature, select a pot at least 8 to 10 inches across to accommodate new growth. Size up the pot every 1-2 years as the root system expands.
