TRIO Cottage 30 vs. 40: Size Comparison

Both sizes have three separate removable liners. The larger TRIO 40 provides significantly more planting depth, root space, and water capacity in each section.

Measurements are approximate. Planting volumes and reservoir capacities are per liner unless labeled as combined totals. Each liner holds its own plants and growing medium.

Which TRIO Cottage Size Should You Choose?

• TRIO Cottage 30: Great for smaller patios, balconies, herb gardens, compact flowering plants, and climbing vegetables with appropriately sized root systems. Measures approximately 39 inches long.
• TRIO Cottage 40: Better for fuller flower arrangements, larger climbing plants, ornamental grasses, and substantial privacy displays. Offers more than twice the planting volume per liner. Measures approximately 51 inches long.

Three Separate Liners for Flexible Planting

Unlike a traditional rectangular planter with one continuous soil bed, TRIO Cottage includes three independent square planting liners. Each has its own water reservoir and removable handles. This allows you to grow different plants in separate sections, replace seasonal arrangements, or remove individual liners for maintenance.

Additional Benefit: The TRIO 30 planting liner is also compatible with CUBICO 30. The TRIO 40 liner is compatible with select LECHUZA 40-size planters, including CUBE 40, CUBICO 40, and CUBICO Alto.

Optional Trellis: Create a Living Privacy Screen

Transform TRIO Cottage into a decorative green divider with the optional LECHUZA TRIO Trellis. The trellis provides climbing support for vines, flowering plants, and suitable vegetables, making it an excellent choice for patios, balcony screening, and outdoor seating areas.

Optional Pedestals: Raise Your Planter

Coordinating LECHUZA TRIO pedestals raise the planter by approximately 5.9 inches (15 cm). They're a practical way to elevate your planting display and create a more finished appearance on patios, terraces, and outdoor living spaces.

Pedestals are available separately in sizes designed for TRIO 30 and TRIO 40. They are not included with the standard planter.

Best Plants for TRIO Cottage

TRIO Cottage is particularly useful for growing a mix of plants or creating a vertical garden with the optional trellis.

• Climbing Vegetables: Compact cucumbers, pole beans, and appropriately sized patio tomato varieties with suitable support.
• Herbs: Basil, parsley, chives, oregano, and other culinary herbs. Separate liners make grouping plants by watering needs easier.
• Flowering Vines: Annual climbing plants and compact clematis varieties with suitable growing conditions and trellis support.
• Seasonal Flowers: Petunias, calibrachoa, begonias, geraniums, and colorful mixed annual arrangements.

Planting Tip: Choose plants based on each liner's individual growing space, not the full length of the planter. TRIO 30 has approximately 9.1 inches of planting depth per section, while TRIO 40 has 11 inches. Vigorous vegetables and large-rooted shrubs may outgrow the available space.

How the Self-Watering System Works

Each of TRIO Cottage's three planting liners has an independent self-watering reservoir and water level indicator. This lets you monitor and refill each section as needed.

1. Prepare the Liners: Assemble the included irrigation components and add the supplied LECHUZA-PON drainage substrate.
2. Add Your Plants: Fill each removable liner with suitable growing medium and plant your chosen flowers, herbs, vegetables, or foliage.
3. Establish the Roots: Water from above during the initial establishment period, typically about 2–3 weeks, while checking growing-medium moisture.
4. Begin Reservoir Watering: Once established, fill the reservoirs according to LECHUZA's instructions.
5. Monitor Each Section: Check the individual water level indicators. Refill as needed, allowing appropriate drying intervals for the plants growing in each liner.

Outdoor Drainage: Remove the drainage plugs for outdoor use to allow excess rainwater to escape. Self-watering simplifies plant care but does not eliminate the need to monitor moisture, especially in hot or windy weather.
