Volcano Cherry Laurel Topiary makes entrances and patios feel tailor-made with a clipped evergreen form and color-changing foliage. The glossy leaves emerge orange-red to bronze-red before maturing to deep green. Trained as a single-ball topiary, it adds height and polish without the spread of an untrimmed hedge shrub. Our designers often use a matched pair by a doorway where the red new growth can be easily noticed.
Prunus laurocerasus 'Jong1' produces is a compact, winter-hardy evergreen with a naturally dense habit that responds well to trimming. Fragrant white spring flowers may appear on candle-like spikes, followed by black ornamental fruit that birds may visit. It tolerates sun or shade, urban conditions, and short dry periods once established. Grow it in large containers, formal beds, courtyard plantings, or as a sculpted accent among looser shrubs.
Volcano Cherry Laurel Topiary Care
Site in full sun to part shade; 4–8 hours of light delivers the best color, with afternoon shade helpful in hotter zones. It grows in amended clay, loam, sandy soil, or silt as long as drainage is dependable and the soil holds moderate moisture. Suitable soil pH ranges from very acidic to slightly alkaline, about 4.5 to 7.5.
Water deeply after planting, then check the soil 2 to 3 inches down before watering again. Once established, it can handle brief dry spells, but drooping leaves or limp stem tips mean the root zone needs a slow soak. Feed in early spring with a slow-release shrub and tree fertilizer, preferably one with iron or sulfur for strong foliage color.
Trim after spring flowering to maintain the rounded topiary head, then touch up again in summer if the shape starts to loosen. Use hand pruners for the cleanest finish, since hedge shears can cut through the broad leaves and leave browned edges. Note: all parts are toxic if ingested—keep away from pets and livestock.
Volcano Cherry Laurel Topiary Spacing
Place Volcano Cherry Laurel Topiary 3 to 4 feet from walls, railings, or nearby shrubs so the ball form stays visible and has air circulation. Use a container at least 16 to 20 inches wide with drainage holes, moving larger as the root system fills the pot. Add gravel for weight in windy spots and stake the trunk its first season if breezy. Stop fertilizing containers about two months before frost and protect the pot from repeated freeze-thaw cycles in colder parts of Zone 6.
In landscape beds, pair this cherry laurel with agapanthus, Indian hawthorn, coral bells, and red hot poker for contrast in leaf shape and seasonal flower color. In mixed containers, use calibrachoa or sweet potato vines around the base.
