The Water Oak Tree, or Quercus nigra, is an adaptable tree that grows well in damp areas. This medium-sized tree grows quickly and stands 50 to 80 feet tall and 50 to 70 feet wide. Bluish-green foliage has rounded lobes that are more pronounced when the tree is grown in full sun. The margins or edges of the foliage may be smooth or bristle tipped. The Water Oak Tree is deciduous, although it sometimes grows as an evergreen in warm climates. This tree can live in damp conditions and is often found in flood plains and wet sites.
This tree is native to the Central and Eastern U.S., and once acclimated, it requires little care. Plant in a protected area because wind and ice can be damaging. Spring flowers give way to acorns. The acorns take a few years to reach maturity, so they provide long-lasting texture and visual interest. This oak is an excellent choice to line a street or long driveway or to cast shade on a lawn.
Water Oak Tree Care
Plant Water Oak Tree in full sun and in fertile, acidic soil that is moist but well drained. Young trees need consistent water for the first two growing seasons. Established trees only need water during an extended dry period.
Shape the tree from late fall through early spring. Remove no more than 25% of the growth at a time. Prune young trees to establish a central leader. The Water Oak is not as strong as other Oak varieties, so careful pruning can prevent breakage as the tree matures.
Water Oak Tree Spacing
Space Water Oak Trees at least 80 feet from buildings and clear of utility lines. Breakage is a common problem, so leave enough space around the tree to ensure homes, sheds, and other structures are safe. Avoid planting delicate shrubs under a Water Oak to protect them from being crushed by broken branches. Leave 50 feet between trees when creating a dense planting.
