The Welder Muscadine Grape Vine is hardy and produces abundant sweet-tasting fruit. This Vitis rotundafolia cultivar features green foliage and fragrant white blossoms. This grape vine is self-fertile, so a single plant can produce fruit, but it will crop more heavily when nearby plants can cross-pollinate. Amber-colored grapes are ready to harvest in late August to early September, or possibly later in the northern reaches of its growing range.
A mature plant will produce 10 to 15 pounds of fruit. Welder grapes are excellent for eating fresh or making juice or wine. The Welder Muscadine Grape Vine grows in zones 7 through 9 and is cold and heat tolerant.
Welder Muscadine Grape Vine Care
Welder Muscadine Grape Vine is a fast-growing plant that thrives in full sun. Plant it in a spot with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight. Muscadine plants are adaptable and can handle different soil types, but for best results, plant it in moist, well-drained soil with high organic content. Plant Welder Muscadine Grape Vines 12 to 15 feet apart center on center.
Growing Welder Muscadine Grape Vine
Give this grape vine a trellis or support. Mature Welder Muscadine Grape Vines reach 10 to 15 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide. Plants often bear fruit in the second or third year after planting.
Muscadine Grape Vines make excellent container plants. Use a pot with drainage that measures up to 2 inches larger than the root ball. Repot every one to two years and increase the pot size when the plant becomes rootbound. Water container-grown plants when the top few inches of potting soil are dry.
Watering Welder Muscadine Grape Vine
Water the Welder Muscadine Grape Vine weekly or when the soil is dry. Water deeply to saturate the root ball, but avoid prolonged soggy conditions. Dormant plants do not need water.
Feeding Welder Muscadine Grape Vine
Routine fertilization during the first two growing years sets the plants up for success. Feed Welder Muscadine Grape Vines in early spring using a balanced fertilizer. Mature plants do not need fertilizer.
