With exceptionally refined, dark green foliage and whorls of dainty, pink blooms this top performer is an excellent choice for your containers and landscape. It has small, serrated, oval leaves with a somewhat fine texture. The fan-shaped flowers, colored a shade of mid-pink, continue to bloom from planting to frost. The plant grows 8-14 inches high with a trailing habit that works well in hanging baskets. Whirlwind® Pink Fan Flower Scaevola aemula has won numerous awards.
The many attributes of this plant include being drought, heat, and pest resistant. It is a good choice for a low-water garden or for a xeriscape. Like other plants that are native to Australia, it is very tough. Bees and butterflies love it. In addition to hanging baskets, use this spiller in the landscape, for example, as an edging plant or as a groundcover. It is excellent in window boxes and combination planters.
Whirlwind® Pink Fan Flower Care
At planting, apply fertilizer or compost on beds and regularly fertilize plants in pots to promote flowering. Do not use a fertilizer with too high of a phosphorus level. Deadheading is not needed; however, you can pinch back stems if it becomes leggy. This plant is very adaptable to both dry and moist conditions, but it hates standing water. Keep the soil evenly moist, not wet. Allow containers to dry out slightly before watering to prevent root rot. It is best grown in full sun to partial shade.
You can overwinter fan flowers inside if desired. Pot it up and move it indoors to a sunny, south-facing room with temperatures above 40 degrees. Water sparingly – just enough to stop the leaves from wilting. Or take a cutting from a non-blooming stem, dip it in rooting powder and insert it into sterile potting mix. Keep barely moist. Roots form in about one month.
Whirlwind® Pink Fan Flower Spacing
A 14-inch container will hold, for example, one purple fountain grass, one Scaevola, and one Supertunia Mini Vista®. When grown in masses in the landscape, space each plant 10-12 inches. It has a spread of 18-24 inches.
