Fan flowers get the name because the flowers look like fans. The fleshy leaves are thick, succulent-like. Whirlwind White and other fan flowers are slightly mounded at 8 to 10 inches tall. They have a graceful cascading or trailing habit, making them ideal for hanging baskets. Fan flowers form a delightful summer edger with an 18 to 24 inch spread in the landscape. Or cluster several together to create bright spots of color. Sun loving and drought and heat tolerant, Whirlwind White fan flowers can take a lot of abuse, summer to frost.
In a pot or window box, allow Whirlwind White fan flower (Scaevola aemula) to spill over the edge. The plant also will wend its way a bit among its companion. Bees visit these flowers. Whirlwind fan flower come in three other colors.
