Growing Zones
White Dragon Fruit offers a taste of the tropics with massive, night-scented flowers that mature into crisp, mildly sweet fruit with snowy white flesh. Hylocereus undatus grows as a climbing cactus that can reach 8 to 20 feet tall and 3 to 10 feet wide when trained on a sturdy support. Compared with many tropical fruiting plants, it is easier to manage in a container because the stems can be pruned, trained, and moved indoors before cold weather. It’s equal parts statement plant and productive edible.
White Dragon Fruit Care
Plant White Dragon Fruit outdoors in spring once nights stay warm, or grow it year-round in a container that can move indoors in cooler climates. Set the plant in a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix, give it a strong trellis or post, and allow 6 to 10 feet of space outdoors where it can climb without crowding nearby plants. Full sun to part sun is best, with light afternoon shade helpful in very hot inland gardens. Soil should be sandy or loamy with excellent drainage and a slightly acidic to neutral pH.
Select 3 to 5 strong main stems and tie them loosely to a sturdy post or trellis as they climb. Tip-prune once the stems reach the top of the support to encourage a branching, cascading crown. Remove weak, damaged, or tangled shoots after fruiting to keep the plant open and easier to manage.
Growing White Dragon Fruit
White Dragon Fruit may produce once the plant has built enough size, often after the stems are well established and supported. The large white flowers open at night and may set fruit better with hand pollination, while cross-pollination from another dragon fruit plant can improve yield and fruit size. Fruit usually ripens about 4 to 5 weeks after flowering, turning bright pink with white flesh inside. Harvest when the skin is fully colored and the fruit gives slightly. Refrigerate unwashed fruit for a few days and serve chilled, blended, or spooned fresh from the rind.
Growing White Dragon Fruit in Containers
White Dragon Fruit is well suited to containers because it can be overwintered indoors outside Zones 10 to 12. Use a heavy 15 gallon pot with drainage holes, and repot every 2 to 3 years in spring when the roots fill the container or the mix breaks down. Move containers indoors before temperatures drop below 50°F.
A central post, trellis, or cactus frame is important because the stems need support as they lengthen and branch. For container companions, use rosemary, oregano, or hens & chicks; in warm edible landscapes, pair it with banana trees or avocado trees.
Watering White Dragon Fruit
Water young plants when the top few inches of soil dry, giving enough water to moisten the root zone without leaving the pot wet. Established plants tolerate short dry spells, but wrinkled stems signal drought stress and yellowing, mushy stems often indicate overwatering.
Feeding White Dragon Fruit
Feed in spring and summer with a balanced cactus fertilizer or a diluted fruiting-plant fertilizer while the plant is actively growing. Light, regular feeding supports stronger stems, flowering, and fruit development, but stop feeding in cool weather when growth slows.
