White Guava Tree delivers tropical fruit to the patio with an evergreen canopy and sweet, white-fleshed guavas that ripen in early fall. In a container it typically matures around 8 ft. tall and about 3 ft. wide, staying narrow enough for decks and sunny courtyards. Psidium guajava sets fragrant white flowers that become green-to-yellow fruit with juicy flesh and small seeds. It is self-fruitful so one plant can carry a crop. This is one of our favorite tropical fruit trees because it handles pruning well, rebounds from warm-season heat, and can be shifted indoors when cold snaps arrive.
White Guava Tree Care
Plant outdoors in spring after frost in zones 8–11, or keep it in a container you can move indoors for winter protection. Give it full sun to part sun (8–10 hours is ideal) in fertile, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH around 5.5–7.5. Amend heavy clay with perlite, bark fines, or a raised mound for quicker drainage. Prune in late winter or right after a harvest to shape it as a compact shrub. Be sure to remove suckers and water sprouts, and keep the center open so flowers and fruit form on fresh new growth.
Growing White Guava Tree
Expect your first fruit in about 1–2 years. Plan for a harvest window around September to October in many home gardens, with fruiting stretching longer in frost-free climates. Start growing indoors in a bright window or sunroom if you live outside the hardiness range, and move it outdoors once nights stay warm.
Growing White Guava Tree in Containers
Use a pot about twice the width of the current root ball, which usually lands in the 15–25 gallon range for a #3 plant, with a fast-draining premium mix. Repot every 2–3 years (or step up one pot size) to keep growth steady. Keep it as a “thriller” with a clean understory, like rosemary, oregano, and marigold for a warm-climate look. In the ground, try growing it with hibiscus, jasmine, and agapanthus nearby for layered evergreen and bloom interest without crowding the root zone.
Watering White Guava Tree
Water deeply, and let the top couple inches of soil dry before watering again, since roots prefer oxygen between soakings. Drooping new leaves and dull foliage usually indicate dehydration, while constantly wet mix points to drainage and overwatering issues.
Feeding White Guava Tree
Feed monthly from spring through fall with a balanced fertilizer that includes micro nutrients, and keep granules or liquid applications at least 6 inches away from the trunk. Consistent feeding supports new shoots, which is where guavas set flowers and fruit.
