Feature
The White Phalaenopsis Orchid is captivating and surprisingly easy to grow. It can have as many as 10 or 20 gently fragrant flowers at once, starkly contrasting the four or so leaves, giving the plant a minimalist appearance. The pure white flowers measure several inches wide and dangle from arching stems. The flowers will last for months at a time. This orchid typically blooms once each year, although, with proper care, it can bloom several times annually. The thick, glossy, ovate leaves are deep green and contrast the flowers.
Botanically named Phalaenopsis amabilis, this orchid also goes by Moon Orchid, Moth Orchid, and The Lovely Phalaenopsis.
Best Locations For Growing White Phalaenopsis Orchid
Location is vital for orchids because they only bloom when their environment is just right. Choose a warm, sunny spot with increased humidity. A table or mantle in a high-traffic area is ideal for admiring and appreciating the charming flowers. Improved airflow and circulation are additional benefits of placing this plant in a busy area. The white phalaenopsis orchid is non-toxic and safe in homes with little ones or pets.
White Phalaenopsis Orchid Sunlight Requirements
The White Phalaenopsis Orchid needs bright, indirect sunlight. Increased light levels are necessary for the plant to bloom. Direct light will damage the leaves, so select a spot near an east- or west-facing window but far enough back to be protected from the sun’s harsh rays.
White Phalaenopsis Orchid Care
Orchids are epiphytes and naturally grow on other plants for support. Use a stake to hold the plant upright and display the stunning flowers. Trim the flower spike when the blooms fade. The stem can be removed entirely or snipped just above the first node to encourage another flush of flowers.
Repot the White Phalaenopsis Orchid every other year after flowering is complete. Moth Orchids need rich, loamy, neutral soil that is airy and well-drained. Consider using a mix formulated specifically for orchids to best support the plant.
Watering White Phalaenopsis Orchid
Keep the White Phalaenopsis Orchid’s roots damp at all times. Water the plant when the top inch of potting mix is dry, but avoid overly wet or soggy conditions. Remove runoff from the tray or outer pot.
Increased humidity is crucial. Above-average humidity keeps the foliage lush and encourages the plant to bloom. Use a humidifier or pebble tray to increase the dampness in the air.
Feeding White Phalaenopsis Orchid
Feed the White Phalaenopsis Orchid every two weeks using a balanced fertilizer or a product intended for orchids. Fertilization keeps the plant healthy and supports the bloom cycle. Scale back during the fall and winter and fertilize the orchid every four weeks.
