  • Large Onion With Mild Flavor
  • 12 Inches Tall
  • 4 Inches Wide
  • Plant in Full Sun

For a jumbo onion, Yellow Sweet Spanish offers a mild flavor. Each bulb grows into a 4-inch sized fruit with mild onion flavor for eating raw or cooking. Onions add flavor to so many savory dishes, and those eye-watering compounds in onions are packed with trace minerals and vitamins. Although it can take about 100 days for Yellow Sweet Spanish Onion to reach its full 4-inch size, you can harvest anytime after 2 weeks, even enjoying the green stalks above the bulb as a green onion.

Yellow Sweet Spanish Onion keeps for a long time, too, so it's a smart vegetable to have in the house. Onions can cure in a cool, dry and shaded area, such as a cellar or basement, for up to 2 weeks. Just brush off loose soil and store the onions dry; remove the remaining soil just before peeling.

Yellow Sweet Spanish Onion Care

Onions prefer cool weather. You can plant Sweet Spanish Onions as soon as the weather warms enough to work the ground in spring. Loosen the soil down to about 8 or 10 inches and remove any rocks from the soil. Onions like soil that drains well. Space the bulbs 4 to 6 inches apart in rows that are at least 1 foot apart. Push the bulb down to about 1 to 2 inches below the soil. If the tops are long, trim them to about 4 inches above the soil. Be sure to place the onions in full sun.

Growing Yellow Sweet Spanish Onion

Add a layer of light mulch to the soil to help retain moisture and cool the bulbs below. As the onion bulbs reach the surface, you can brush some of the mulch away to give the bulbs more sun. Yellow Sweet Spanish Onions can take 110 days to reach full size, but you can harvest scallions (the green tops) as soon as they reach 6 to 8 inches tall. You also can harvest onion bulbs before they are the full size if you like. For full maturity, harvest all remaining onions when the leaves above begin to turn brown and droop over.

Since the "fruit" of Yellow Sweet Onion grows under the ground, the only thing you see above is the green onion, so this is a nice, neat edible plant for any spot in a garden or in a container. If you grow onions in containers, use the same sort of loose and fertile soil you would use growing them in the ground. Be sure the container has good drainage and choose one with a wide mouth (top) to allow for the 4 to 6 inches of spacing.

Watering Yellow Sweet Spanish Onion

Water Yellow Sweet Spanish Onion well after planting, keeping the soil evenly and consistently moist. After that, weekly watering is enough in many spring climates, but adjust to watering more often if the weather is dry and windy. Apply water slowly and deeply; a drip system or soaker hose is best.

Feeding Yellow Sweet Spanish Onion

Yellow Sweet Spanish Onion grows best with fertile soil. About 2 weeks after planting, and every 2 to 3 weeks after, apply a balanced fertilizer with nitrogen measured for the size of the growing area. Spread the fertilizer around the soil and work into the top few inches, being careful not to damage any of the onion bulbs.

I was very disappointed in the yellow sweet Spanish onions I received. They were very small and ridiculously priced for what I received. I will not buy from this company again.
