Young Lycidas English Shrub Rose, also known as Rosa ‘Ausvibrant’, produces large, deeply cupped blooms layered with up to 90 petals in a saturated blend of deep pink, magenta, and red, with the outer petals washed in a silvery purple sheen. The scent begins as classic Tea rose and deepens into Old Rose with distinct cedar wood notes that carry on the air. Flowers measure about 4 inches across and appear in generous flushes from late spring through fall. The shrub matures to approximately 4½ feet tall and 4 feet wide, forming a full, bushy silhouette.
Bred by David Austin and introduced in 2008, this English Shrub Rose blends old-world bloom form with repeat flowering. The nodding, old-fashioned flowers are borne singly or in small clusters on arching stems. Color is unusually rich for an English rose, holding its depth even as petals age. Young Lycidas works beautifully in mixed borders, rose collections, or as a fragrant cutting rose. We recommend planting it near a patio or entry so the fragrance becomes part of everyday life.
Young Lycidas English Shrub Rose Care
Plant in full sun, choosing a site with at least six hours of direct light daily for strongest bloom production. It adapts to most soil types provided drainage is good, and performs best in fertile ground with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Incorporate organic matter at planting to improve structure and moisture retention. Water deeply and consistently during its first growing season to establish roots, then maintain even moisture during active growth without allowing the soil to stay saturated. Feed in early spring with a balanced rose fertilizer and repeat after the first major bloom cycle to support reblooming.
Prune in late winter once severe cold has passed, removing dead or weak stems and shaping the plant to maintain an open center. Lightly deadhead spent blooms throughout the season to encourage repeat flushes. In colder climates, apply winter mulch around the base after the ground freezes. Monitor foliage for blackspot in humid regions and provide good air circulation.
Young Lycidas English Shrub Rose Spacing
Space plants about 3½ to 4 feet apart to allow the shrub to develop its natural form. For large containers, select a pot at least 20 inches wide and deep to accommodate root growth. Pair with lavender, catmint, and hardy geranium to soften the base and highlight its rich magenta tones without competing for attention.
Why It’s Called That
Young Lycidas
The name of this rose honors the poem Lycidas, written by the celebrated English poet John Milton.
