For stunning foliage, look no further than the Zebrina Calathea or Zebra Plant as it is commonly known. Botanically named Goeppertia zebrina, this Zebrina Calathea displays striking light and dark green foliage in a zebra-like pattern. Bringing an exotic feel to wherever it is grown, this calathea will add interest to any room or office space.

Best Locations For Growing Zebrina Calathea

Classified as non-toxic, Zebrina Calathea is suitable for growing in any room as long as its growing requirements are met. However, with its spectacular and intriguing foliage, you’ll want to place it somewhere it can be appreciated.

Zebrina Calathea Sunlight Requirements

As with most calatheas, Zebrina Calathea grows best when placed in bright, indirect light. Diffused light is ideal, just avoid strong direct light, which can bleach the plant’s beautiful markings.

Zebrina Calathea Care

In order to thrive, this Zebrina Calathea likes to be kept warm and humid. A temperature of 65-75°F is ideal; just don’t place it near any cold drafts, which will cause it to struggle. Preferring high humidity levels, this plant will benefit from being misted often and grown on a layer of wet gravel or pebbles. Dry or dead leaves may occur over time and can be removed by cutting the stem at the base of the plant with clean and sharp snips or scissors.

Watering Zebrina Calathea

Zebrina Calathea prefers to be grown in well-drained soil that is kept consistently moist. It is sensitive to being overwatered and hates to be left sitting in waterlogged soil. Depending on the conditions, a weekly watering will usually suffice during the growing season. In winter its growth slows and watering should be reduced.

Feeding Zebrina Calathea

To help keep its foliage looking healthy, a liquid houseplant fertilizer can be applied every 4-6 weeks from spring until fall.
