Zesting Lemons Bearded Iris displays ruffled lemon-yellow and white flowers just as many spring bulbs are finishing. Each 4.5-inch flower has upright white standards edged in yellow, lemon-yellow falls that fade toward white at the center, and tangerine beards that add a warm accent. Iris germanica ‘Zesting Lemons’ carries the flowers on sturdy 34- to 36-inch stems above upright fans of glaucous-green foliage. The intricate coloring of this iris makes the biggest impact when massed in small groups.

This perennial grows from rhizomes that gradually enlarge into broader clumps, giving established plantings more flowers and material to divide every few years. Bloom begins in late spring and can extend into early summer, making Zesting Lemons useful between the main spring bulb season and early-summer perennials. Once established, bearded iris handles dry spells well and is generally avoided by deer and rabbits. Use it through sunny perennial borders, along cutting gardens, in raised beds with sharp drainage, or near patios where the flowers can also be harvested for arrangements.

Zesting Lemons Bearded Iris Bulbs Care

Grow Zesting Lemons in full sun, or partial shade with at least 5 to 6 hours of direct light. Plant the rhizomes shallowly in well-drained loamy, sandy, or amended clay soil, leaving the top at or barely below the soil surface. A slightly acidic to neutral pH of about 6.0 to 7.0 works well.

Water regularly during the first growing season when rainfall is limited, then reduce irrigation once plants are established. Mature clumps tolerate dry periods well and should never remain in soggy soil, which can cause rhizome rot. Feed lightly in early spring with a balanced or low-nitrogen fertilizer, and again after flowering to support next year’s buds.

Remove spent flower stalks after bloom and trim declining foliage to about 6 inches in late fall. Clear away old debris to reduce iris borer and disease problems. Divide crowded clumps every three to four years in late summer. In colder climates, apply a light winter mulch around the planting and remove it in early spring so the rhizomes stay exposed to air and sunlight.

Space rhizomes 12 to 24 inches apart to give developing clumps room to expand. For containers, use a pot at least 12 to 14 inches wide with generous drainage, stepping up to a broader container for multiple rhizomes. Allow the potting mix to dry somewhat between waterings and divide when the rhizomes become crowded.

Zesting Lemons Bearded Iris Bulbs Companion Plants

Peonies make excellent landscape partners because they share a preference for full sun and well-drained soil while adding broad foliage and a different flower form around the same general season. Salvia extends the flowering sequence into early summer and appreciates the drier conditions that suit established bearded iris. Little bluestem can add upright texture later in the season after the iris flowers have passed. In large patio containers, alyssum can be used around the edge for a lower layer of spring color, provided the potting mix drains freely and irrigation is kept moderate.
