Abiqua Drinking Gourd Hosta, or Hosta 'Abiqua Drinking Gourd' is a stately perennial with large, cupped, blue-green leaves. This hosta is especially stunning after rainfall or watering, when luminescent pools of water collect in the deeply textured foliage. A summer bonus to the Abiqua Drinking Gourd Hosta is the brilliant display of white to green, trumpet-shaped flowers. This beautiful hosta stands at a height of 18 to 22 inches and has a wide spread of 40 to 45 inches.
Abiqua Drinking Gourd Hosta, bred by Plants That Work, was named 2014 Hosta of the Year by the American Hosta Growers Association. It is a strong grower that spreads without division. It has an upright, vigorous form and is a great low-maintenance option in any shady garden. Its cupped leaves and white flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Your hosta will need protection from slugs and snails, although this variety is more resistant than others because of its heavy texture.
Abiqua Drinking Gourd Hosta Care
Abiqua Drinking Gourd Hosta should be planted in rich, organic soil. They are dormant during the winter, and will shrivel and collapse until the spring growing season. This Hosta is a shade lover, but can tolerate partial sun in colder climates.
Hostas that receive excess sun are smaller in size. They hold their beautiful foliage color, even during the hottest months. You can prune away unwanted or damaged leaves at any time during the growing season.
Abiqua Drinking Gourd Hosta Spacing
Abiqua Drinking Gourd Hostas grow well in containers and can thrive in any shaded garden. Their large, fresh spring leaves make them great understory options, and they grow well, even when competing with tree roots. They should be planted 3 feet apart from center to center.
