- Mature Height 5 - 6 Feet
- Mature Spread 5 - 6 Feet
- Growing Zones 4 - 8
Lightly fragrant, shell pink blooms with reddish throats cover this compact rhododendron in early May and are a nice contrast against the dark, green foliage. Maturing to a size of 3 to 5 feet tall and wide, with a low, rounded growth habit, this rhododendron is a good choice for small areas.
A low maintenance shrub with small, evergreen leaves that turn a purplish-red in fall providing late season color. Although susceptible to a variety of insects and diseases, with proper care and growing environment the effects can be minimal. Aglo is deer resistant and not tolerant of prolonged periods of drought as it prefers moist soil. Would do well as a foundation planting, accent plant in the perennial garden, planted along a fence or as a hedge. Winter hardy in zones 4 to 8 when planted in the ground and will tolerate an urban setting. If it is to be grown in a pot or container it would need to be brought indoors into a cold, sunny space that is above freezing. Native to western China and the Himalayas.
Aglo Rhododendron Care
This rhododendron likes a well-drained, slightly acidic soil and is best planted in full sun to partial shade. They would appreciate an application of peat moss, and either cow manure or compost added to the site when planting. Rhododendrons prefer a moist soil and should be watered well until established.
If you wish to maintain the plant's height and shape, prune Aglo immediately after flowering to preserve next year's buds. Deadheading is recommended but not necessary. If grown in a pot or container this rhododendron must be brought inside in areas with an extended period of below freezing temperatures.
Aglo Rhododendron Spacing
Aglo is best spaced at a distance of 36 to 48 inches and would make a beautiful hedge, foundation planting, accent plant in the perennial bed or in a pot or container.
