Akadama™ Hydrangea, or Hydrangea mac. Akadama™ is a medium-sized shrub with vivid, long-lasting, deep-pink globes that bloom in the summer, and contrast beautifully with its shiny, coarsely toothed, deep-green, foliage. Reaching to heights of 4 to 5 feet with a spread of 4 to 5 feet, the foliage of this season-long stunner turns to a dark burgundy color with the autumn weather.
Native to Japan, the Akadama™ Hydrangea, bred by Bloomables®, is a compact, upright variety with a symmetrical, rounded habit. They make excellent, long-lasting cut flowers, and you can dry and preserve both the flowers and foliage for a winter bouquet. Akadama™ means “red ball” which is a perfect description of these mop-headed, heavy bloomers.
Akadama™ Hydrangea Care
The versatile Akadama™ Hydrangea should be planted in areas with mild winters. It prefers partial sun with dappled shade, and should be watered deeply and regularly until established. Mature plants need average water. You should feed your hydrangeas every year with organic fertilizer. They prefer moist soil with excellent-drainage. If you would like to prune your hydrangeas for size control or shape, it is best to wait until after they bloom in late summer to early fall.
You can control the color of pink or blue hydrangeas by adjusting the soil pH. For bluer colors, soil pH should be below 5.5. For brighter pinks and reds, alkaline solid with a pH of 7.0 or higher is ideal. If you choose to manipulate the color of your hydrangeas, it should be done in the spring before the plant blooms. Be prepared that your hydrangeas may go through several years where the colors are a diluted purple. To keep flowers blue, add aluminum sulfate to the soil. To keep them pink, add lime to the soil or apply phosphate.
Akadama™ Hydrangea Spacing
The Akadama™ Hydrangea is a favorite of florists and can be incorporated in arrangements and bouquets in need of dimension and interest. They are gorgeous planted in shady borders or in containers. This hydrangea’s smaller size makes it perfect in small spaces and yards. Hydrangeas need adequate air flow, and should be planted at least 2 feet apart.
