The almost two-tone flowers of the Albert F Holden Lilac make for a really stunning specimen. It develops large panicles of purple blooms with a silver underside in early summer. Also known as Syringa vulgaris, this lilac produces an upright habit of green foliage up to 10 feet tall. It shows good resistance against mildew.
The light green heart-shaped foliage is particularly attractive and can provide a lovely backdrop for other plants over the summer. Resistant to deer, this lilac is loved by hummingbirds and butterflies. This flowering shrub is perfect for growing at the back of an herbaceous border. You can also use Albert F Holden Lilac to form a stunning, yet informal hedge.
Albert F Holden Lilac Care
The best flowering display is produced when Albert F Holden Lilac is grown in full sun. Light shade can be tolerated but at the expense of some of the blooms. It prefers neutral to alkaline soil that is free draining and fertile. This lilac enjoys moist soil and will require frequent and thorough irrigation to help a good root system to develop. Applying a general fertilizer in late winter will help encourage a good display of flowers.
Pruning immediately after flowering is the only way to avoid losing the next year’s flowers. You can prune out up to one-third of the old stems to promote fresh growth. An annual organic mulch will help conserve moisture over the summer months.
Albert F Holden Lilac Spacing
Over time, Albert F Holden Lilac can reach 8 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet across. Space each plant around 8 feet apart to ensure good air circulation when fully grown.
