The American Sycamore or Platanus occidentalis is a fast-growing tree with an expansive canopy and stunning good looks. This tree has a pyramidal crown and large lobed leaves with serrated edges. Sycamores are known for their uniquely patterned bark. The outer bark is dark brown and peels away, revealing lighter brown bark. Small flowers bloom in clusters during the spring and give way to winged seeds that cascade from the tree.

As the name implies, the American Sycamore is native, so it acclimates quickly and requires little care once settled in. The pyramidal crown and large leaves make this an excellent shade tree. Grow the American Sycamore in zones 4 through 9.

American Sycamore Care

Plant this tree in partial to full sun in moist, well-drained soil. The American Sycamore is a large tree that can reach 75 to 90 feet tall and wide. This tree can grow in damp conditions, and new plants require consistent watering. Established plants need water during a dry spell. Sycamores have shallow and widespread root systems, so plant in open areas away from foundations, driveways, and sidewalks.

The American Sycamore does not require much pruning aside from removing dead or damaged branches. Routinely inspect the plant for signs of pests or disease. This is a fast-growing tree, and a single dose of fertilizer in the spring can support new growth.

American Sycamore Spacing

Space American Sycamore trees 70 feet apart. This large tree needs plenty of space, so plant it away from power lines and far enough from structures.
