Perennial Hibiscuses are guaranteed to be the stars of any garden bed with their oversized and dramatic flowers. Angel Eyes Hibiscus is a beauty that does not fail to impress. This early bloomer has 8-inch flowers with ombre coloring that starts with a deep raspberry eye and ends with the palest pink edging. Angel Eyes is a hybrid Hibiscus that is both cold hardy in USDA zone 4a and heat tolerant in zone 9.
Hummingbirds, butterflies, and native bees are all attracted to the nectar of the large single-petal flowers. Angel Eyes is more tolerant of both dry and wet soils and could be a great addition to the outer zones of a rain garden or the centerpiece of an informal cottage garden. Display a container of Angel Eyes on a deck or patio to lend a laid-back tropical feel.
Angel Eyes Hibiscus Care
Angel Eyes needs acidic to neutral soil and full sun exposure. Well-draining soil that stays consistently moist helps Hibiscus form buds non-stop through the growing season. All soils are acceptable as long as they drain well year-round. Mulching with organic materials like compost or arborist chips will help the soil retain moisture while keeping the roots cool during hot weather.
Perennial Hibiscus is notoriously late to emerge in the spring and may not show any growth until June in some areas. Pinch back the branches to promote a bushy shape, but leave the shrub alone after July 4th to allow flower buds to form. Deadhead as the flowers fade to keep the overall appearance tidy and healthy.
In areas that receive heavy winter snow, cut back all the spent growth to within 6 inches of the ground after the first hard frost. Mulching with shredded leaves, straw, or pine straw helps to insulate and protect the crown. In mild growing zones, you can leave the top growth for wildlife, and cut back the plant early in the spring as the new green shoots emerge.
Angel Eyes Hibiscus Spacing
Angel Eyes reaches 5 feet high and wide and makes a dramatic standalone specimen for the middle or back of a garden bed. Allow at least 2 feet of space when planting other perennials near this dramatic beauty. When planting multiple Hibiscuses in the garden, space plants 60 inches apart to ensure plenty of air circulation. Hibiscus blooms best when the plants are slightly root-bound, so be sure to use a container that is only 2-3 inches larger than the root ball.
